A year ago Warren Central wrestler Dezmen Goddard came into the state meet a semistate champion — and promptly lost his opening match to a fourth-place finisher from another semistate.
Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Goddard reversed that, knocking off semistate champion Bryce Baumgartner of Bellmont 4-3 on a late takedown on the state meet’s opening day. Baumgartner came into the match 40-1 and ranked fifth at 170 pounds, while Goddard (38-8) was 13th.
“It felt great coming back this year getting the win,” Goddard said. “Anything can happen any night. Any given night any wrestler can be beat. That’s the way the sport is.”
Goddard’s upset helped the second-ranked Warriors to a perfect 8-for-8 performance that gave them possession of first place in the team standings with 28 points. But, “I told my kids there’s 70-some points still up there,” Warren Central coach Jim Tonte said. “There’s still a long road ahead.”
Top-ranked Brownsburg moved six wrestlers through and sits in second place with 23 points. Bulldogs Blake Mulkey (120 pounds), Brayton Lee (138) and Nathan Walton (170) all kept their perfect records while advancing.
“Having that good of kids on your team helps (provide) great practice partners and having great matches in practice to get you ready for your real matches,” said Mulkey, who is ranked seventh in his weight class. “They’re pretty intense (practices) almost every day.”
In a night marked with several upsets, two locals pulled off some of the biggest. Hamilton Southeastern’s 16th-ranked Spencer Irick’s overtime takedown gave him a 3-1 win against No. 2 Andrew Davison of Chesteron at 182 pounds. Davison came into the match 38-0.
And Avon’s unranked 152-pound Jacob Clark pinned No. 4 Dru Berkebile of Frankton in the second period. Clark came into the state meet with 10 losses but said his team’s regular and postseason schedule had him ready for state. “It helped me a lot,” he said. “There’s a lot of tough competition.”
New Palestine’s 132-pound Chad Red improved to 180-0 in his career with a first-period pin of Bellmont’s Daniel Gunsett. Red’s quest to become the third Indiana wrestler to go undefeated in his career while winning four state titles continues Saturday morning.
Danville’s top-ranked Brock Hudkins made it 77 wins in a row with an 18-1, second-period tech fall of Oak Hill’s Travis Davenport at 126 pounds. And Cathedral’s top-ranked Blake Rypel made it 88 wins in a row with a first-period pin of Lake Central’s Russell Gibbs at 182 pounds.
Rypel was part of a strong Cathedral effort that put the Irish in third place with 20 points. Five Irish wrestlers advanced; 126-pound Breyden Bailey, ranked second, helped the cause with a first-period pin.
