Last weekend was cold, windy, wet and … full of chalk.
Chalk means the seeding held true and that’s what played out during tough weather conditions last weekend on the opening weekend of the Section V football playoffs. The better seed won 17 of the 20 quarterfinals matchups. Maybe the upsets are coming this weekend?
Here are the three interlopers for the semifinals on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Class B: No. 6 Palmyra-Macedon, which upset Finger Lakes East rival and No. 3 Wayne, 27-7. That result reversed a 21-18 loss in Week 1.
Class C: No. 6 Attica, which upset No. 3 Letchworth/Warsaw, 33-12. Attica came in riding a pretty good wave. It finished the regular season by walloping Oakfield-Alabama/Elba 61-0 and Holley 49-0.
Class D: N. 5 Bolivar-Richburg, which survived a second-half rally and a drive into the red zone in the final two minutes by No. 4 Finney to hold off the host Falcons, 16-12.
There were no upsets in the large-school divisions and three defending champions are still alive: Bath (Class C), Batavia (B) and Bishop Kearney (D). Kearney has moved up this fall Class C, though, and the unbeaten Kings are favored in their semifinal game at 4 p.m. Saturday against Attica (5-3). The semis also feature two rematches from the 2015 playoffs.
In Class A, top-seeded Greece Athena (8-0) plays No. 4 Canandaigua (6-2). The Braves beat Athena, 28-21, in last year’s semis before losing to Brockport in the title game, 28-27. They play 5 p.m. Friday at Rhinos Stadium.
In Class C, No. 1 East Rochester/Gananda lost last year’s championship, 40-30, to Bath and the Rams also knocked out out the Bombers in the 2014 semifinals. ER gets its shot at redemption at 1 p.m. Saturday at Caledonia-Mumford.
