USA Baseball's 18U National Team wins sixth consecutive gold medal

USA Baseball’s 18U National Team won the gold medal at the 2016 COPABE Pan American “AAA” Championships, with a 6-1 victory against Cuba on Sunday in in Monterrey Mexico.

The 18U team finished with a 7-1 record and won the program’s sixth consecutive gold medal in international competition.

Hans Crouse (Dana Point, Calif.) allowed one hit over seven innings and had a no-hitter for 4 2/3 innings. He struck out 11 and walked three for the win. Jordan Butler (Odessa, Fla.) did not allow a hit over two innings to close out the victory.

Team USA scored three runs in the second inning on a two-run double by Hagen Danner (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and an RBI double by Nick Pratto, Danner’s high school teammate.

Jarred Kelenic (Waukesha, Wisc.) hit a two-run home run in the seventh to push the lead to 5-0 and Royce Lewis (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) had an RBI double to cap the scoring.

Kelenic was named the Most Valuable Player, and Triston Casas (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was named the tournament’s home run champion for his two homers earlier in the competition.

Cuba won the silver medal and host Mexico won the bronze. Team USA, Cuba, Mexico and Nicaragua advance to the WBSC U18 Baseball World Cup next year in Thunder Bay, Canada.
