Hockey is among the growing list of sports holding a national high school championship.
Forty prep hockey teams will compete for national titles in two divisions at the 2016 USA Hockey High School National Championships from March 17-21, according to a release from Virginia-based public relations firm Brotman-Winter-Fried.
The event will crown one national champion for teams from one high school and another for teams from combined schools. Teams can qualify for the event by winning their league, state title or a qualifying tournament, according to the release.
The only team currently guaranteed a bid is host club McLean (Va.) High. Games will be played at the Ashbury (Va.) Ice House and SkateQuest in Reston, Va., with the semifinals scheduled for Sunday and the two title games held on Monday morning.
DICK’S Sporting Goods has hosted a national championship tournament for boys’ basketball, and Colquitt County (Moultrie, Ga.) coach Rush Propst has outlined a plan to launch a four-team national football championship in the near future.
