Troy Brown became the second University of West Florida player to get freshman of the week honors by the Gulf South Conference.
Brown, a left-handed pitcher, joined infielder Robert Lopez, who won the GSC freshman award two weeks ago.
Brown made his second career start last Wednesday against Stillman. The freshman shut down the Tigers lineup over the course of three shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four in an eventual 1-0 win.
Brown would carry his midweek success into his relief appearance against North Alabama on Sunday. He threw 3.1 innings of shutout relief while striking out seven and allowing just one hit.
Brown’s seven strikeouts against North Alabama sets a new career high for the freshman and is tied for the most in a single game by a UWF relief pitcher this season.
For the week, Brown tallied 11 strikeouts over 6.1 innings pitched while walking just one batter and surrendering two hits. Brown kept opposing hitters quiet, holding them to a .095 batting average while not allowing an extra-base hit.
The UWF baseball team is back in action tomorrow, as the Argonauts host Spring Hill at 6:00 p.m.
UWF women’s golfers finish seventh
Led by Elin Olsson’s sixth place individual finish, the ninth-ranked UWF women’s golf team took home seventh place at the Lady Eagle Invitational Tuesday, hosted by Southern Mississippi.
Barry University won the event. Tourney-host Southern Miss finished second. For the Eagles, freshman Miranda Holt competed as an individual, aside from USM’s five players in the team competition, and finished with the best score in that group.
Holt posted rounds of 81-77-80.
Olsson posted a season-low round of 72 to finish tied for sixth in the event, lowering her score each round for a 81-76-72—229 total. It was her fourth top-10 effort of the year and second in four events in the spring semester.
The even-par effort was the lowest of the day and tied for the second-lowest in the tournament.
“She had a few less putts than yesterday and eliminated the two double bogeys from the second round and that proved to be the difference for her,” UWF head coach Bryan Clarke said.
Sophomore Paloma Vaccaro posted a 79 – her 10th-consecutive in the 70s this spring – to finish tied for 15th at 233.
UWF will be off for three weeks before hosting the Argonaut Invitational, April 4-5 at Marcus Pointe Golf Club in Pensacola.
