Victor big mover in boys soccer poll

If you’re looking for a dark horse to win the Section V Class AA boys soccer tournament, much the same way Hilton was last fall when it won the title as a No. 8 seed, look to the east side of Monroe County.

That’s where Victor resides and the Blue Devils are the big mover in this week’s Democrat and Chronicle‘s large-school coaches’ poll. Coach Steve Fish’s team, which took a five-match winning streak into Wednesday’s match against visiting Penfield, jumped four spots to fourth in the poll. Victor was just 3-4 and that included 2-0 and 4-0 losses early on to No. 1 Fairport, but it avenged a 4-1 setback to No. 7 Hilton with a 3-2 victory on Sept. 23 in a match when top scorer Trevor Clifton (13 goals/7 assists) had two assists and Jeremy DeKenipp had two goals.

The Blue Devils also beat two other ranked foes, No. 6 Honeoye Falls-Lima, 2-1, and No. 3 Greece Athena, 6-3, in that stretch. Tacking six goals on a two-time defending sectional champion like Athena as they did on Monday was impressive.

The Cadets, who like Victor have been trending up, are seventh in the poll, but they can’t be a sleeper because they’re the defending champions.

Here’s this week’s poll:
