Sometimes the most magnificent performances come from places where you don’t expect them. Like, say, an otherworldly hockey save by a 16-year-old.
The play you see above is the highlight of young Matt Schaab’s life. The teen is the goaltender for the Howard Huskies, a Maryland-based hockey program that recently competed in the 16-U USA Hockey national championships in Northern Virginia. At one point in a game (potentially this one) Schaab found himself out of position and off line well in front of the cage when an opposing forward got the puck and let fly. The shot seemed sure to sail to the back of the cage … until Schaab came flying in front with a jaw-dropping diving save.
The entire play is a showstopper, but the screen shot directly below showcases just how much ice Schaab had to cover on a full-on belly slide. That is some stop.
We have no idea how much more hockey Schaab has left, or how many highlights like the one above he can pull off. Given the one he already has under his belt that may not matter; he’s already a legend between the pipes.
