Well, you don’t see this every day.
Playing in a game against Giltner High School, Nebraska rival Shelton lined up to return a punt. The Giltner kick from sophomore Karter Watson was a good one, with the punter booting the ball from Giltner’s own 10-yard-line all the way down to the Shelton 30. That’s when things got weird, with the kick ricocheting off Shelton’s designated return man and flying more than 20 yards upfield, directly into the waiting arms of ever-aware Daniel Romero.
From there, Romero had a phalanx of blockers inside to pave his way to the end zone for six critical points for Shelton.
In the end, the freak touchdown wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs, who fell 60-34 to the Hornets. Still, it made for one of the season’s strangest highlights, and one that this particular Shelton team and its fans will probably look back on and smile over long after the season ends.
