The Darien lacrosse program is the standard setter in Connecticut. Now they may be an all-time standard setter in high school trick plays.
Behold, the majesty of a perfectly executed full-field trick play. The trickeration starts with a loose ball pickup by Darien defenseman Rock Stewart, who circulates back to the cage and pulls off a perfect faux handoff with goalie Ryan Cornell. From there, Cornell earns the 2016 lacrosse Oscar by pushing up field with a furious cradle, all without the ball.
By the time New Canaan players figure out that Cornell doesn’t have the ball, Stewart was streaking toward the cage and, eventually, flipping the ball off to attackman Colin Minicus, who scored an easy goal for the Blue Wave in a 9-5 Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title game win.
“(The play was) one of the best hidden ball tricks in high school lacrosse history,” Darien head coach Jeff Brameier told the Darien Times.
He’s not wrong.
