The Friday night face off between Garland and Garland Lakeview High in Texas ended with a 44-18 rout in favor of Lakeview and a nasty if brief farrago during the prescribed postgame handshake line.
As reported by the Dallas Morning News, Lakeview was in control throughout its victory in the annual all-Garland grudge match. After a 14-6 lead at halftime, the Patriots truly took over with a 16-point third quarter, and Garland never closed the gap, leading to heightened tension among the Garland players and fans, all of which boiled over when the teams lined up for the traditional postgame handshake at midfield.
Instead of a handshake, a group of undisclosed players engaged in a bona fide shove and punch out, building from the ejection of one of each team’s players following a punch being thrown in an on-field argument during the fourth quarter.
As noted by the Morning News, the entire postgame bust up lasted a total of fewer than two minutes, with members of the two teams quickly separated. The fight’s brevity was a welcome respite, though it didn’t entirely spare the two schools blushes.
