Williams Field (Gilbert, Ariz.) High School junior kicker Brandon Ruiz has big goals for his senior football season:
“100 percent touchbacks, everything 70 yards plus,” he said about kickoffs.
“Break the current (state) field goal record of 63 yards held by Jeff Locke of the Minnesota Vikings,” he said of the former Glendale Mountain Ridge kicker’s feat in 2007.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Ruiz has been looking good in practice. On Monday, after school, he went out to the Williams Field football field and set a personal record in practice that his friend Casey Waters filmed. It got over the bar from 72.5 yards out.
Ruiz, who is ranked No. 3 in the 2017 class nationally for kickers by Chris Sailer Kicking, will have a busy summer.
“My goal this summer is to hit some SEC and additional college camps and be committed by the end of summer,” he said. “Ole Miss, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Arizona, Arizona State, Rutgers, Cal, Penn State, Northwestern and some Ivy Leagues. I will be at Alabama’s kicking camp June 4 and Tennessee June 3. I’m still setting other dates.”
