Well, that didn’t take long. One week into the season and we already have our first truly unbelievable defensive play, and it ends in a touchdown at that.
During the Florida faceoff between the Interlachen Rams and Wildwood, star Rams wide receiver and defensive back Daniel Perez read a desperation heave from Wildwood quarterback Demarlon Lollar. While Perez knew where the ball was going, he couldn’t quite keep his footing, slipping as he dove for the ball just inches above the turf. No matter. Rather than give up on the interception, Perez flipped the ball up and behind him, while peeking over his left shoulder.
It’s that peek that makes it clear Perez knew what he was doing on the play, and the result was as positive as he could have dreamed: A footrace to the end zone which helped spark Interlachen’s 42-12, season-opening rout.
Perez and his teammates may not get another chance to make a show-stopping play like that again this season. In fact, the odds are that they couldn’t pull off the feat again if they tried. Luckily for them it already happened, and now it’s been saved on game tape and disseminated for everyone to muse on again. Forever.
