Here is how you win a regional title.
The man making all the moves in the highlight above is Cole Kinnamon, who stars for St. John High School, in St. John, Kansas, outside Wichita. He was competing for St. John’s summer team at the Mid American Youth Basketball National Championship when he found his squad in a tie game with just seconds remaining. He got the ball and then made the tourney his own, cutting up court, dropping a defender with a nasty crossover after he crossed midcourt, then pulled up to fire off a contested three to beat the buzzer.
As if he needed any additional difficulty, the defender who correctly positioned himself in front of Kinnamon’s shot forced his release to be pumped, leading to a double-pump attempt with a remarkably high degree of difficulty. The result was still an incredible game-winner, and a tournament winner to boot.
The reaction to the made shot was as emotional a dog pile as you’ll see for a traditional title, let alone a summer winner. Good on him, too. No matter what St. John achieves in the year ahead, they’ll always have Kinnamon’s winner.
