Here’s a new one: A Division I football coach recruiting teenagers by sending them a video of himself hoverboarding while literally saying, “Hey! I’m recruiting you while riding a hoverboard! Is anyone else?”
Such is the length to which Kansas coach David Beaty is stretching to differentiate himself from the recruiting crowd. We don’t know how effective Beaty’s in the moment pitch has been, but we do know that it rings true in one key way: We don’t know of anyone else recruiting teens while hoverboarding, working in both the requisite “Big Dog,” and campus slogan, in this case a hearty Kansas, “Rock, Chalk.”
Give Beaty this: He knows he has to do things differentially to get top prospects to Kansas, and if that means incorporating hoverboards, Snapchat, or any meme du jour, Beaty is in. He’s going for it, and that deserves attention and respect, whether you have any interest in hoverboards, snapchats or even know what a meme is.
Don’t worry if you fall in that category, either. Beaty is happy to bring you up to speed.
