Much like snowflakes, no two punt returns are alike.
We dare you to find one that looks anything like what La Mirada (Calif.) senior speedster Elijah Hicks pulled off during his team’s 62-0 rout of Norwalk.
First off, you can’t fault the Norwalk punter here. He blasts one from his team’s 30 to the opposing 26-yard line, and the ball bounces to the 8 before Hicks decided to pick the ball up.
But oh, to have Hicks’ confidence.
Picking the ball up at the 8 like a baseball outfielder conceding a double and then initially going backward, he then glides forward effortlessly. As the announcer aptly puts it, Hicks finds “cruise control.” Without having to make much of a move, Hicks strides 96 yards up the alley to pay dirt.
The punt coverage leaves something to be desired, of course. But it is no wonder from the above video, though, why the 6-foot, 185-pound Hicks has gotten his fair share of attention in recruiting.
Indeed, Hicks was a busy man Friday night.
