VIDEO: Pa. hockey star scores on Senior Night five months after spinal surgery

While the news that the tumor doctors discovered on Kyle Massari’s spinal cord this past summer was not cancerous came as a welcome relief, it made the Holy Ghost Prep (Bensalem, Pa.) hockey senior co-captain’s recovery from his Sept. 14 spinal surgery no less daunting.

With Monday’s Senior Night circled on his calendar, Massari embarked on the long road back, returning to the ice on Feb. 3 and receiving clearance from doctors for contact on Feb. 16.

All that set the stage for an incredible comeback story that played out at Grundy Ice Arena on Monday. In the final regular-season home game of his illustrious prep career — including the 2015 Class AAA state championship during his junior campaign — Massari made his return.

And in the sort of storybook ending Hollywood couldn’t script, Massari scored a second-period goal in Holy Ghost Prep’s 8-3 rout of Delaware Military Academy (Wilmington, Del.).

When it came time to handing out the game puck, Holy Ghost Prep hockey coach Gump Whiteside had little difficulty deciding who deserved recognition for the memorable evening.
