It’s official: the Running Man Challenge is a crossover meme.
Not only has the “My Boo”-backed viral craze started by Maryland basketball players Jared Nickens and Jaylen Brantley crossed barriers of seniority, gaining admirers and imitators from both the professional and scholastic ranks, it’s also gained devotees from other sports. First it was high school football players jumping on board, as we saw at both the Nike Opening Regional in Charlotte and Robinson High School, among others. Now it’s hitting the baseball diamond, where one of its first forays incorporated both significant creativity and a whole lot of Ghost Town DJs.
No, the East Lansing baseball team in Michigan does not feature a number of athletes who study tap or ballroom in their free time. You probably guessed that from a quick look at their Running Man Challenge. What it does feature is a crew of guys who clearly like to have fun, and a coach who is happy to let them do so, all while waiting to parachute in with a cameo at the end of a minute long meme video.
Given that the Trojans are off to a 3-8 start, it’s nice that they can keep a collective smile and brave face on the season and remember to focus on what’s truly important: Having fun.
