Not 24 hours into the Texas high school football season, Houston Westfield senior wide receiver Jaylon Garrett set an awfully high bar for highlight reel-worthy catches this fall.
Looking more like All-Pro Texans wideout DeAndre Hopkins than an unranked prep recruit, the 6-foot, 160-pound Garrett found his way behind crosstown rival Lamar’s secondary, hauled in a one-handed catch from Westfield junior quarterback Blair Benton and scampered for a 58-yard gain, according to the Houston Chronicle’s game story.
YouTube user GOTMIXTV captured the sensational snag from a different angle:
Garrett’s third-quarter catch set up a score that put Westfield ahead, 21-9, thanks in large part to the senior wide receiver’s 93-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first half:
But Lamar stormed back for a 38-28 victory. Maybe Garrett just needed more touches.
Garrett was the third or fourth option as a junior during Westfield’s 10-2 campaign last season, collecting just nine catches for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 11 games.
Considering he matched his 2015 scoring output in the first game of his senior season, remember Jaylon Garrett’s name, because his 2016 highlight reel is impressive already.
