Christian Valdez had no business getting to the ball on a miraculously deep drive during his Lakewood team’s Southern California matchup with Millikan. That didn’t mean he didn’t get there. Quite the opposite.
As you can see above in video via MaxPreps, Valdez delivered a serious contender for play of the season in California, and possibly nationwide. Not only did Valdez make the catch, he did so while able to keep his wits about him enough to spring up and fire back in a dart to second base to complete a double play.
In fact, if anyone wanted proof of just how incredible and unlikely Valdez’s grab was, just check out what happens with the Millikan runner on second base. He celebrates what he assumed was a bases-clearing drive before doing a double-take, starting back and then falling on second reversal mostly out of a sense of sheer shock.
Fittingly, Valdez was very fired up as he walked back to the dugout. Unfortunately his energy couldn’t be maintained by his teammates, who eventually capitulated in the 10th inning of what was eventually a 3-1 victory for Millikan.
That scoreline can’t diminish Valdez’s accomplishment on the field, which is sure to go down as one of the most jaw dropping plays of the 2016 season, and maybe beyond.
