The fall sports season is nearing its final stages with volleyball and swimming heading into their final week and football nearing its conclusion.
The following Lansing State Journal high school athlete of the week candidates were among the top performers in mid-Michigan last week.

MAYA FERLAND, LAINGSBURG VOLLEYBALL: Ferland contributed to the Wolfpack capturing a second consecutive Class C regional title. She was a key performer for the Wolfpack in a four-set win over Grand Rapids Covenant Christian and led the team in aces (four), kills (11) and blocks (six). She also helped Laingsburg beat Kent City in the title match.
HANNAH GREENWOOD, PORTLAND ST. PATRICK VOLLEYBALL: The senior helped the Shamrocks capture their first Class D regional championship in school history last week. Greenwood combined for 37 kills and nine blocks to help St. Patrick to a pair of victories. She had 20 kills and five blocks in the semifinal win over Caseville and followed with 17 kills and four blocks in the victory over Kinde North Huron.
JD ROSS, DEWITT FOOTBALL: The senior put together a dominant performance in his final game, scoring all four of the Panthers’ touchdowns in a 35-28 loss to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s on Friday in a Division 3 regional final. Ross had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, scoring runs of 90 and 6 yards and a 27-yard TD reception. Ross rushed for 124 yards and had 32 receiving yards in the contest.
JARED SMITH, PEWAMO-WESTPHALIA FOOTBALL: The senior running back had a pair of rushing touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, to help the No. 2-ranked Pirates to a 17-14 victory over top-ranked Traverse City St. Francis in Saturday’s regional final. Smith had 91 rushing yards in the contest.
