Update, May 12: Our voting period has ended.
For 32 weeks during the school year, FLORIDA TODAY held weekly Athlete of the Week voting.
This week, voting will take place for the Readers’ Choice Athlete of the Year. We have chosen the top six vote-getting male and female athletes from the 2015-16 season. The winner will be revealed after voting closes Thursday at noon. Sixteen votes were held before the winter break, and 16 after. Nearly 31,000 votes were collected across the 32 weeks for 138 student-athletes that were nominated.
Then, in the ensuing two weeks, we’ll have Female Athlete of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year votes based on season accomplishments.
Here are your Readers’ Choice nominees in alphabetical order:
Amanda Beach, MCC cross country
During Week 8, Beach won her vote for winning the Holy Trinity Fall Classic with a time of 18:00.69. It was the best time by a Brevard County girls runner during the 2015 season to that point. Beach was later chosen FLORIDA TODAY’s 2015-16 All-Space Coast girls cross country runner of the year.
David Demeter, Cocoa Beach football
During Week 3 the Minutemen running back scored a 2-point conversion with no time left in the game to propel Cocoa Beach to a 22-21 victory over Poinciana, while also snapping the team’s 13-game losing streak. Demeter rushed for 112 yards, and also punched in a 2-point conversion after the team’s first touchdown of the game.
Casey Jackson, MIHS wrestling
In the first vote after the winter break, Week 17, Jackson cruised to a wide margin of victory in the Athlete of the Week voting. Jackson beat Joey Tufo of host Jensen Beach to place first at 113 pounds at the Cradle Cancer tournament. Merritt Island placed ninth as a team. Jackson was the only weight class winner from Brevard in the 23-team event.
Sterling Jenkins, Rockledge track & field
For Week 31, the second-to-last Athlete of the Week vote, Jenkins won both girls hurdle races at the District 13-2A meet: the 100 in 15.61 seconds and the 300 in 48.70. She also ran on the winning 4×400 relay, which won in 4:00.95.
Kaitlyn Jensen, Viera softball/track & field
Jensen was the top female vote getter for a single week during the season. During Week 25, Jensen hit three home runs during the week, two in an 11-1 defeat of Harmony, driving in four runs. In another game, she homered in a 17-2 win over Satellite. At the Phillip Dummer Elite Classic, she won the discus by 10 feet with a throw of 112 feet, 5 inches. She also won the shot put with a mark of 35-5.
Joey Lieb, Eau Gallie soccer
During Week 15, Lieb garnered more votes than any other athlete this season. He single-handedly collected almost 1,500 votes. His accomplishments during that week included his team grabbing three wins, with Leib scoring six goals and assisting on another. He had two goals each in a 4-2 win over Port St. Lucie, 2-0 win over Bayside and 7-1 win over Astronaut. Leib assisted on a third goal in the Port St. Lucie win.
