VOTE NOW: Athlete of the Week
It’s time to vote for The News-Press high school athlete of the week. Voting will close at noon on Thursday.
Nominees are derived from scores and stats called and emailed in by Lee County coach’s during the week. Voting begins each Monday at 2 p.m.
Coaches can email scores to email@example.com or call in scores at 239-335-0357. The deadline for each night’s results is 10:30 p.m.
Here are this week’s nominees based on their performances between March 14-19:
Hannah Holloway, Mariner
Holloway tossed a perfect game with seven strikeouts and went 3-for-4 with home run and two doubles in a four-inning 15-0 win over Gateway Charter. She also three a two-hitter and gave up one run in a 5-1 win over Estero.
Ben Specht, ECS
Specht’s two-run double provided the go-ahead run in a 4-3 victory over St. John Neumann on March 17. On the mound, he struck out 10 to pick up the win.
Katelynn Bandemer, Mariner
Bandemer dropped the first set at first singles only to win the next two sets with the final one coming in a tiebreaker during the Triton’s 4-3 loss to Fort Myers. She also picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win in Mariner’s 7-0 win over Oasis.
Jacen Hinkson, Estero
Hinkson scored a 6-0, 6-0 win as Estero knocked off Lehigh March 14 and he also won 6-1, 6-0 as the Wildcats fell to North Fort Myers.
Girls track and field
Sierra Oliveira, ECS
Oliveira ran a personal best 5:18.30 in the 1,600-meter run at the Wolfpack Invitational on Saturday, outkicking Estero’s Megan Giovanniello in the last 300 meters to win the event. Her time stands as the third best in Florida in Class A.
Boys track and field
Kaya Aydogmus, Ida Baker
The senior hit on a season-best mark of 145 feet, 2.5 inches in the discus on Saturday at the Wolfpack Invitational, winning event. Aydogmus, who already owns the state’s third-best mark in the shot put, is now in the top 10 in the state in the discus.
Kyle Palmer, Riverdale
Palmer helped the Raiders earn their first win in three seasons with two goals in a 6-5 win over Palmetto Ridge on Monday. He had three goals for the week and has a team-high 15 on the season.
Kameryn Gannon, Bishop Verot
Gannon had 12 saves on 14 shots in a 15-4 win over Cape Coral on Friday. She has a team-high 58 saves on the season.
