Waggener High School junior cornerback Jairus Brents had already been receiving high-major interest, but on Saturday he received an offer from the No. 1 ranked team in the nation.
Brents posted on his Twitter account that he had picked up an offer from Alabama after attending Alabama’s 51-3 blowout victory in Tuscaloosa over Mississippi State. Brents’ coach at Waggener, Jordan Johnson, confirmed the offer in a text message.
“It is such a great time for Waggener and more importantly for Jairus,” Johnson said. “He is paving a road of success for all the young men at Waggener to have dreams and aspirations to play at the next level, and not just the next level but the top. I am so proud of Jairus and all he has overcome to get to this point.”
With the offer from Alabama, Brents now holds 17 Football Bowl Subdivision offers according to 247 Sports, including from Louisville, Kentucky, Indiana, Wisconsin, Western Kentucky, Michigan State, and Tennessee.
Brents played nine times for Waggener this season, playing on both sides of the ball. Defensively, as a cornerback, Brents made 58 total tackles, 16 solo and 42 assisted. On offense as a wide receiver, Brents caught 15 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns. He also recorded three touchdowns on kick and punt returns.
Update on Sunday: Johnson confirmed via text message that Brents was offered by Florida, taking his scholarship total to a reported 18 FBS schools.
