Weather postpones DIAA Swimming prelims

Wednesday’s boys preliminaries in the DIAA Swimming and Diving Championships were postponed about halfway through the event due to repeated lightning delays.

The University of Delaware’s Rawstrom Natatorium is an indoor facility, but UD safety policy and national standards require a 30-minute delay after any lightning strike within 9 miles.

The boys preliminaries are scheduled to resume at 4 p.m. Thursday with the fourth heat of the 100-yard butterfly. Doors will open for spectators at 3:30, and DIAA encourages spectators to keep their bands from Wednesday night and show them at the gate for admission on Thursday.

The facility will be cleared of spectators following the boys preliminaries, and the doors will open for fans with tickets to the girls preliminaries at 6 p.m. The girls prelims will start at 7, one hour later than originally scheduled.
