TITUSVILLE – The Lake Brantley Patriots held off the Titusville Terriers 14-7 at Al Werneke Field. Lake Brantley recovered two fumbles for touchdowns, one of their own, and one caused by a Terrier bad snap. The game was heavily influenced by turnovers and penalties as both offenses struggled to gain any ground.
Lake Brantley took the lead late in the first quarter on a controversial fumble that was recovered in the end zone by Marc Wheeler. C.D. Dennison took a pitch from Marcus Dequattro and was hit immediately at the 8-yard line by a Terrier defender. The ball came loose and bounced toward the goal line. It appeared the ball struck the pylon, by rule a touchback in favor of the defense, before it ricocheted into the end zone and was recovered by the offense for the score.
Titusville coaches frantically tried to get the official’s attention to plead their case, but the referee waived them off and ordered the extra point instead.
The Patriots scored their second and final touchdown when a bad snap in the end zone eluded OC Brothers. Landen Rowland recovered and the Patriot lead was extended to 14-0. Titusville answered with a long drive of its own, concluding with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Brothers to Liam Szczerba. The halftime score of 14-7 matched the eventual final score as the teams traded turnovers in the 2nd half, but neither team scored again.
Titusville’s defense was especially efficient limiting Lake Brantley to 92 yards rushing just a week after the Patriots ran for 500 yards against Boone High School. The Terrier defense has surrendered just three scores in three games, all coming on short fields and after odd circumstances. Terrier defenders forced six fumbles on the night.
