Melbourne Central Catholic hosted the Class 5 Satellite Scorpions in their 2016 home opener Friday evening at Hustler Stadium. Last week the Hustlers easily defeated Father Lopez by 40 points and this week they shutout the Scorpions 41-0.
The Hustlers displayed a balanced run-pass offense as they rolled up 391 yards, while their defense added two touchdowns taking advantage of Satellite miscues.
MCC set the tone early as it drove 72 yards to the Scorpion 8-yard line where Will McKegg capped the drive with a 25-yard field goal. On the Hustlers’ next possession they only needed a single play to score as Lavonte Valentine burst loose through the Scorpions defense on an 85-yard touchdown run.
On the Scorpions’ first possession of the second quarter a 25-yard errant punt snap was recovered by the Hustlers’ Jaden Gonzalez in the end zone. Will McKegg added the extra point giving the Hustlers a 17-0 lead. Hustler QB Joaquiin Collazo extended MCC’s lead as he connected with Darnell Victor on a 26-yard scoring toss and Will McKegg added his second field goal of the half on a 35-yard boot. The Hustlers quick strike offense allowed them to score on each of their five possessions in the first half, which resulted in an MCC 27-0 lead at the intermission.
The Scorpions’ hope of recovering from the deficit was dashed when Victor intercepted the Scorpion’s first play from scrimmage with a pick-6 from the Satellite 19-yard line.
“We played well early but our special teams hurt us tonight,” said Scorpion coach Mark Carstens “(MCC) kept us off balance and were able to take control of the game.”
“They’re a big and very good team,” said coach Stacy Sizemore. “I’m proud of our kids and our execution got better during the game, which was very important to us.”
