Varsity Insider Week 2 Player of the Week —
Matt Pires, Somers: When I visited Somers this preseason, the coaches raved about Pires and his potential to have a prolific senior season. They compared him to Joe Festa, another receiver who exploded as a senior and eventually helped the Tuskers win a Class A championship. Pires still has to prove he can fill those big shoes, but Friday’s 28-6 victory over Sleepy Hollow was an impressive move in that direction.
Week 2 Coach of the Week: Mike Meade, Woodlands
Week 2 Scoreboard: Results from Sept. 9-12
Get this: In Somers win Friday, Pires touched the football just five times. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound wideout turned four of those five touches into touchdowns.
Here’s how efficient and productive Pires was: He caught three passes from Kevin Olifers. They covered 88 yards and accounted for three touchdowns. He also returned two Sleepy Hollow punts for another 62 yards, including a 45-yard jaunt to the end zone.
Pires has been an efficient playmaker all season. In the opener, he caught three passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns and returned two punts for 22 yards. That means he has scored on five of his six receptions and averaged 21.0 yards per punt return. So when Yorktown hosts Somers Friday night in a meeting of 2-0 teams, Pires might be worth a defender or two.
