MELBOURNE Melbourne Central Catholic gave its Homecoming fans a treat as the Hustlers continued their winning ways by rolling up 547 yards of offense, while their stingy defense gave up less than 200 yards as they defeated Ocala Trinity Catholic 40-10 Friday evening at Hustler Stadium.
Once again, the Hustlers got off to a fast start as QB Joaquin Collazo connected on the first play of the game on a 60-yard touchdown pass to Lorenzo Hardy. Early in the second quarter Collazo threw his second touchdown from 30 yards out to Nate Fleming while the very dependable Will McKegg added the extra points giving MCC a 14-0 lead.
With 7 minutes remaining in the second quarter the Celtics began to take advantage of Hustler miscues as Brandon Dickson intercepted a Collazo pass at the MCC 33-yard line. Four plays later the Celtics got their first points of the game as Zach West connected on a 17-yard field goal. On the Hustlers’ subsequent possession the Celtics blocked a Hustler punt and recovered the ball inside the MCC 5-yard line. The Celtics then scored their only touchdown as Robert Rivers scored on a 5-yard touchdown run. McKegg added a 38-yard field goal giving MCC a 17-10 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter MCC took charge as the Hustlers put their effective running game on display. On all three of their third quarter possessions they scored touchdowns by using their ground game as Hardy scored from 38 yards and Lavonte Valentine added touchdown runs of 46 and 15 yards giving the Hustlers a 38-10 lead at the end of three quarters.
“This was probably the best team we played this year, they were big and very physical ” said MCC coach Stacy Sizemore. “Our offensive line played very well which opened up the running game tonight. Our defense also played a heck of a game with two goal-line stands and only giving up three points with their backs against the wall.”
The only points in the fourth quarter were the result of an errant Celtic punt snap thru the end zone, giving the Hustlers a 40-10 win and their seventh consecutive victory of the season.
Next week MCC District 6-3A (7-0, 2-0) is on the road to face the Lions from Miami Champagnat Catholic High School.
