TITUSVILLE It wasn’t pretty, but the home team came out on top.
After a slow start and plenty of turnovers, Titusville bested Rockledge 21-7 Friday night in a District 14-5A match-up.
After the first quarter and most of the second passed by without a score from either team, running back Dontavious Marcus found a hole in the Raiders D-line and sprinted 42 yards into the end zone with just under five minutes left in the half.
Rockledge responded two possessions later when Antoine Green caught a 10-yard pass from Cameron Latham with just less than 30 seconds to go in the second quarter.
Neither team would score again until near the end of the third quarter. It only took three plays for Titusville to assemble a three-play, 90-yard drive led by Marcus, capped off with a 52-yard run from him for a touchdown.
After an interception by Titusville’s DeShaun Lynn late in the fourth, Marcus was again able to score on the very next play, running 24 yards for the final score.
It was a big night for Marcus, who carried the ball 15 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 42-yard reception for a touchdown. Brothers completed nine passes for the terriers for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Rockledge running back Jalen Mitchell also made impressive gains on the night, carrying the ball 23 times for 102 yards.
Titusville head coach Wayne Lawrence was glad to win the game and said he’s hoping to tie with Merritt Island and Rockledge for second place in 14-5A if the Terriers and Raiders can both win next week. Titusville plays Space Coast while Rockledge takes on the Mustangs.
“It’s a district game. We needed to get this W,” Lawrence said. “It took us a while to adjust to some of the shifts. It was nothing that we didn’t expect… once we got that part of it fixed, then we found our niche.”
He praised Marcus, saying he’s worked hard and that he earned the win at home.
“We had to execute every play and we had to come out stronger than we did in the first half,” Marcus said. “We came together as a team, we stayed strong and we did our job.”
Next week Merritt Island will be at Rockledge for a 7 p.m. game, and Titusville will host Space Coast at the same time. Both games are 14-5A games.
