COLUMBUS – Rex Wells has come out of retirement to become the next athletic director at Polk County.

He replaces Brandon Schweitzer, who has relinquished the job to become the Wolverines’ principal.

Wells retired in March 2015 after 23 years at Asheville High. He had been the Cougars’ athletic director since 2000. Wells holds the school record for dual team wrestling wins (326) and was inducted into the North Carolina chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame seven years ago. He was also the defensive coordinator for the 15-0 Asheville football team that won a NCHSAA 3-A championship in 2005.
