NOBLESVILLE — After 29 straight girls state championships, c’mon, what more could Carmel swimmers do?
There is always something:
• They could put someone on the U.S. Olympic team.
• They could score more points than a year ago, when they perhaps had the best high school team of all time.
• They could score more diving points.
• They could, um, cheer more.
“This has got to be the best our fans have ever been,” Carmel coach Chris Plumb said. “They were into it the entire meet. It’s cool to see a group of athletes get excited for one another.”
There are about 80 girls on the team, and not all may swim at sectional. The remaining 50 or so piled into two buses, traveled to Noblesville and watched their teammates win a 32nd consecutive sectional. Students, parents and fans kept the decibel level high, just as the Greyhounds kept sweeping swims.
Carmel scored 586 points, or 98 percent of the 597 possible. They won all three relays, finished 1-2-3 in eight individual swims and 3-4-5 in diving. Noblesville was second with 429 points.
Last year’s sectional champs scored 570.
Carmel’s 30th consecutive state title — essentially a foregone conclusion — would be the longest such streak in the history of high school sports. The state meet is next Friday (preliminaries) and Saturday (finals) at the Natatorium at IUPUI.
These 2016 swimmers are teenagers. Yet the magnitude of the achievement would not be lost on them.
“I mean, it’s an honor to swim for this team and represent 30 years of girls who have come before us and keep the legacy going in a positive direction,” senior Claire Adams said.
Since last year’s state meet, Adams has won two national titles, won a world junior silver medal in Singapore and beaten a world-record holder in Duel in the Pool. Plumb has tailored her training not to state, but to June’s Olympic Trials.
She won her signature event, the 100-yard backstroke, in 54.21 seconds and took the 100 freestyle in 51.13.
Then there was Jackie Pash, a senior racing in her first sectional. She finished third in the 200 individual medley and made the state cut.
History has shown it is easier to score at state than to make Carmel’s state team.
“It kind of made me reach my goals more, like wanting to motivate myself, instead of getting down on myself,” Pash said. “I just kind of want to prove to myself, to my coaches, that I deserve to be there and want the opportunity.”
The only sectional records were by Veronica Burchill, whose time of 54.16 broke her own mark in the 100 butterfly, and sister Sammie Burchill, 2:02.36 in the 200 IM.
Emma Nordin, defending state champ in the 500 free and under-18 national champ in the 200 free, advanced to state despite battling illness.
If you wonder whether Carmel can keep it up … two races were won by freshmen, Grace Pangburn in the 50 free and Kelly Pash in the 200 free. A third freshman, Madeline Foxworthy, was touched out in the 100 breaststroke by sophomore Brinley Barton.
Another freshman, Westfield’s Erin Verbrugge, was the only non-Carmel swimmer to advance. She was fourth in the 500 freestyle, making the state cut.
• At Franklin: No. 11 Franklin Community ended Center Grove’s 26-year sectional streak, 521-360. Franklin freshman Cara Gildersleeve won the 200 and 500 freestyles, clocking 1:50.83 and 4:55.51. Franklin last won a sectional in 1989.
• At HSE: Robyn Clevenger won the 50 and 100 freestyles in 22.60 and 49.80, helping No. 4 Hamilton Southeastern repeat as sectional champion over No. 3 Fishers, 541-447. Fishers’ Lauryn Parish won the 200 free in 1:49.03.
• At Zionsville: No. 10 Zionsville won a 12th successive sectional. The Eagles’ Kylie Mihok won the 100 and 200 freestyles in 50.94 and 1:49.40.
• At Plainfield: Natalie Myers won the 200 and 500 freestyles for champion Avon.
• At Ben Davis: Brownsburg won the team title, and Pike’s Cathryn Schroeder took the 50 and 100 freestyles.
• At Lawrence North: No. 8 North Central won a 10th successive sectional.
