The LaBelle Cowboys, led by a great game from junior running back La’Travis Williams, earned their first win of the season over visiting Evangelical Christian School, 38-14.
After having last week’s opener cancelled, the night couldn’t have started any better for the Sentinels, who grabbed an early lead with a special teams score.
Williams took over from there, scoring on consecutive drives to give LaBelle a lead it would not relinquish. Williams, who finished with 95 rushing yards and two touchdowns, added a 70-yard punt return fr his third score of the game.
LaBelle grabbed a 28-7 lead midway through the second quarter, as quarterback Tyler Burton found Angel Vargas for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
The Sentinels pulled within 28-14 on a 35-yard connection between quarterback Logan Pearlman and receiver Correy Massey. The second half, and especially the third quarter, saw the Sentinels squander multiple opportunities in Cowboys territory, losing three fumbles in the second half, two while driving deep into LaBelle territory.
“This was a lot like a preseason game; we played bad to start and then got better as the game went on,” ECS coach Tyler Gold said. “We have to get on our horse and get better quick.”
