FISHERSVILLE – In a game that featured 923 yards of total offense, it was one late defensive stand that made the difference.
After alternating scores for 45 minutes, East Rockingham got a defensive stop in the red zone late in the fourth quarter, allowing it to hang on to a wild 51-44 victory over Wilson Memorial on Friday night in Fishersville.
Jaylen McNair passed for 404 yards and five touchdowns for the Eagles. But it was his 3-yard run with 8:50 to play in the fourth quarter that finally put his team ahead for good.
The Hornets marched right back down the field in an effort to regain the advantage. After advancing 66 yards on 11 plays, a fourth down run came up three yards short, giving the ball back to East Rock with 2:55 left.
From there, the Eagles used three completed passes and a pair of McNair runs to eventually run out the clock and escape with the win.
It was a night where Wilson rolled up 475 yards of total offense and still came up short. Eddie Harris (119), Logan Leche (104) and Colton Tyree (100) all surpassed 100 yards rushing in the loss.
There were only two turnovers, with each team picking up an interception on back-to-back plays late in the second quarter. Neither punter made an appearance. When it came to time of possession, the Hornets were the dominant team. Wilson Memorial had the ball for 36:39, compared to just 11:21 for East Rockingham.
Wilson (2-7) finishes out the season next Friday at Page County, while East Rock (6-3) hosts Buffalo Gap.
