WINDSOR — Pueblo Centennial made a big mistake in the fifth inning of Saturday’s Class 4A baseball District 4 title game at Windsor.

The visitors, trailing the Wizards by two runs, got two runners on base and started talking from the dugout.

Star Windsor pitcher Jake Greenwalt didn’t like that. So he shut them down. He struck out two batters to escape the jam and eventually won the game 3-0 to send the Wizards to the eight-team 4A state tournament.

“When I have guys on, and they start talking and chirping a bit, that gets me pretty fired up,” Greenwalt said. “I don’t want the season to end.”

In the district title game Greenwalt threw a complete game, allowing three hits, one walk, no runs and 11 strike outs.

“It’s just enjoyable to sit back there and not have to worry about anything,” catcher Tyler Shubert said. “They can’t catch it. I just go inside, outside and work all over the plate. They’re not touching him.”

He had an RBI to help himself in the game. Shubert and Landon Ewing also added RBIs as the Wizards secured a return to the 4A state tournament for the second year in a row.

His performance followed a stellar showing from Corte Tapia in the first game. Tapia didn’t allow a run as the Wizards rolled past Weld Central 16-0.

The state tournament begins Friday.
