Cole Krantz fell just short of winning the Class 4A boys golf state tournament Tuesday.
The Windsor High School senior finished third in 4A, one stroke behind Silver Creek’s Jackson Solem and Discovery Canyon’s Luke Trujillo. It’s the second year in a row that Krantz took third at state.
Entering the day in second place, three behind Trujillo, Krantz made an early charge Tuesday at River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale.
He birdied three of the first five holes to close the gap, then chipped in for eagle at No. 7 to give him a one-stroke lead.
Krantz and Trujillo were tied at five-under after nine holes. Trujillo’s birdie on No. 10 gave him a lead and a chipped in birdie on No. 12 gave him a cushion on Krantz. In the meantime ,Solem, the defending state champion, closed in and forced a playoff, but Trujillo rallied to win the title on the second playoff hole.
Krantz, who will continue his golf career at the University of Colorado, finished Tuesday with a one-under-par 71 and was three under for the two-day tournament.
Teammate Mitchell Rasmuson finished tied for 54th after shooting 15 over par Tuesday.
