Riverdale junior Kyle Palmer sprinted to the finish line to win The News-Press Athlete of the Week award for the week of March 14-19.
The lacrosse attacker, who leads the team with 15 goals, gave the Raiders ample support in their first win of the season over Palmetto Ridge, scoring two goals during a 6-5 win. He registered 52-percent of the vote in winning his first honor.
In total, eight individuals were nominated and 4,469 votes were cast over the week.
Nominees are derived from scores and stats and emailed by Lee County coaches during the week. Voting begins each Monday at 2 p.m. and closes at noon on Thursday.

Coming in second place was Bishop Verot junior goalie Kameryn Gannon, who had 1,582 votes. She had 12 saves over 14 shots during a 15-4 win over Cape Coral on Friday.
In third place was Mariner freshman Hannah Holloway, who tossed a perfect game with seven strikeouts during a 15-0 win over Gateway Charter. She followed with an outing against Estero, giving up just two hits in a 5-1 win.
Other nominees included ECS’s Ben Specht (baseball) and Sierra Oliveira (track), Mariner’s Katelynn Bandemer (tennis), Estero’s Jacen Hinkson (tennis) and Ida Baker’s Kaya Aydogmus (track).
