Lee County bowlers dominated The News-Press Athlete of the Week voting for Sept. 12-17 with Island Coast’s Wyatt Smith taking first and Cape Coral’s Kaela Ruby finishing second.
Nominees are derived from scores and stats called and emailed in by Lee County’s coaches during the week. Voting begins each Monday at 2 p.m.
Coaches can email scores to email@example.com or call in scores at 239-335-0357. The deadline for each night’s results is 10 p.m.
Smith, who earned 54 percent of the vote, bowled the first 300 game in county high school history in a victory over East Lee County on Sept. 15. It is the fourth time he has achieved the feat in his career.
Ruby accounted for 22 percent of the vote after tossing a 236 game against Riverdale leading the Seahawks to a 3-2 match victory on Sept. 13.
The other nominees were South Fort Myers placekicker Daniel Diaz, Lehigh running back Chris Curry, Riverdale swimmer Jace Chouinard, Fort Myers swimmer Madi Baron, Evangelical Christian golfer Shane Reynolds, Fort Myers golfer Anna Chazal, Riverdale volleyball player Kylee Whiteleather, Estero cross country runner Evan Williams and Riverdale cross country runner Chelsey Oliver.
