Cypress Lake cross country runner Sage Williamson garnered 33 percent of the vote to win The News-Press Athlete of the Week honors for Oct. 17-22.
Nominees are derived from scores and stats called and emailed in by Lee County’s coaches during the week. Voting begins each Monday at 2 p.m.
Coaches can email scores to firstname.lastname@example.org or call in scores at 239-335-0357. The deadline for each night’s results is 10 p.m.
Williamson finished ninth overall in the 3A-11 district championship with a career-best time of 20:38. The junior advanced to the 3A-3 regionals at Estero Community Park on Friday.
Fort Myers cross country runner Evan Babatz finished second with nearly 29 percent of the vote after winning the 3A-11 District championship with a time of 16:57.65. The senior earned his first victory of his cross country career and helped Fort Myers win their third consecutive team title.
Other nominees were South Fort Myers quarterback Maurice Flournoy, Dunbar linebacker Bakari Jackson, Bishop Verot volleyball player Mindie Mabry, Estero golfer Luke Farmer, Canterbury golfer Brittany Shin, North Fort Myers bowler Casey McKee, Riverdale bowler Remi Howe, Riverdale swimmer Jace Chouinard and Estero swimmer Paige Madden.
