The semifinals have concluded here at the Times Union Center, and it’s been an historic day for Section 1. Four locals are heading to the finals — East Ramapo senior Trey Wardlaw (106 pounds), Fox Lane sophomore Matt Grippi (138), Lakeland/Panas senior Alex Melikian (182) and Mahopac senior Mike DiNardo (195). The finals are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

That’s good news, but what made this a record-setting day for Section 1 is the performance in the wrestlebacks. There are 17 wrestlers from the section who have guaranteed a spot in the top six, which earns them All-State status in their respective weight classes. That shatters the previous Section 1 record of 12, which was set in 2014.
