Yale’s student body gave it their all, but the “Battle of the Fans” title will find a home out west.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association named Traverse City West the state’s top student section, edging out four other finalists.
Yale, which was the first finalist the MHSAA visited, still earned the Fill the Stands Award. This is the second straight year the “Kohler’s Kids” student section — named after Yale boys basketball head coach Garnett Kohler — reached the final five.
“Just like our first visit to the school in 2015, Yale loaded a full quarter of its gym with students, and the sound once again was palpable,” the MHSAA press release said. “Yale feels like it has a Class B title contender in its boys basketball team, and the ‘Kids’ feel like a catalyst to that success and do their part by showing up to support en masse.”
To round out the other finalists awards, Charlotte won the Dazzling Debut Award, Munising won the Be the Example Award and Muskegon Western Michigan Christian took the Pound-for-Pound Award.
“I’m always very proud of the kids. they represent us so well and they make the environment all the more enriching,” Yale superintendent Kenneth Nicholl said. “What a very, very proud community we have.”
