Give Vince Santoria this: He certainly has an air for the dramatic.
As noted across the internet, Santoria — a junior at Oswego East High in suburban Chicago — used his winter trip to Cubs spring training in Arizona to propose a trip to the prom to his girlfriend, Julia Bertucci. The ask was reasonable enough, and Bryant’s role, holding up a sign asking the question, was equal parts simple and self-explanatory. Still, that a budding superstar like Bryant was willing to take a couple minutes to take part in the stunt (with a wide smile, at that) is a touching gesture from a professional athlete to a devoted teen fan.
If there was any question, Bryant made it clear the entire thing was no big deal. As he should.
By the way, Bertucci said yes, of course.
The best part of the Cubs-themed stunt may not have been the ask itself, but the unexpected contingency plans that emerged shortly after Santoria had Bryant ask the question:
Both Santoria and Bertucci seem to be taking their sudden internet fame in stride, even if it means their personal trip to prom gets a bit more attention than they bargained for.
