Spring is the busiest season for high school sports, with the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association sanctioning competition in baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls tennis, golf, girls soccer, outdoor track and field and Unified track and field.
If The News Journal’s preseason rankings hold true, many of the defending champions in those sports will be tough to beat.
Right on cue, the temperature is expected to plunge into the 30s – accompanied by a 20-mph wind – for the first day of the spring season Wednesday. But we’ll be sweating it out as the state tournaments conclude during the first week of June.
St. Mark’s opens the season ranked No. 1 in baseball. The Spartans have won nine of the last 14 state titles, and have several key pieces returning from last year’s 20-2, DIAA championship team. Caravel, which has won two titles in the last six years and lost to St. Mark’s in last year’s final, should contend again.
The lack of a truly dominant returning pitcher makes softball difficult to predict. Sussex Tech, which returns much of an 18-3 team that lost to Caravel in the state final, will start the season on top. But the defending champs can never be counted out, and Lake Forest, Smyrna and Charter of Wilmington have plenty of experience coming back.
Salesianum has won five of the last six DIAA titles in boys lacrosse, so it’s hard to look anywhere else for a No. 1 team. But it will be a long time before we see how the Sals (16-3 last year) stack up against a Delaware opponent. Sallies’ first 12 games will come against teams from five different states and Canada, before the Sals close the regular season against in-state foes St. Mark’s, Cape Henlopen and Caesar Rodney.
Cape Henlopen has a new girls lacrosse coach in Lindsey Eichner. The Vikings also have a 99-game in-state winning streak, and eight consecutive state championships. So Cape is ranked No. 1 again until further notice.
Padua is just as dominant in Division I girls soccer, with a 41-game unbeaten streak and five straight state titles. The Pandas finished second nationally in the USA Today/National Soccer Coaches Association of America spring rankings last season, and begin this year ranked ninth nationally and first in Delaware.
Caravel has won all three Division II girls soccer titles since DIAA split the sport into two divisions in 2014, and the Buccaneers will open this season on top. But Newark Charter returns all of a promising team, and Indian River, Sanford and Archmere also look to contend.
Defending champion Tower Hill is ranked No. 1 in golf. But two players who helped the Hillers win the 2016 title – DIAA individual champion Phoebe Brinker and her brother, Ty – have transferred to Archmere and could launch the Auks into contention.
Caesar Rodney swept the team titles in boys and girls tennis last season, and the Riders have talented lineups again. The CR boys will start the year ranked second behind Tower Hill. The CR girls are ranked first, followed by Archmere and Charter of Wilmington.
