Final 2017-18 Super 25 ranking: Unranked
Edison Academy runs through the best player in the state.
The Pioneers enter the season as reigning back-to-back Class C state champions on the back of senior wing Rickea Jackson, the No. 2 player at her position and the No. 9 prospect in the country, according to ESPN. She won the Detroit Free Press’ Girls Basketball Player of the Year and the Female Athlete of the Year awards last year. On Friday, Jackson committed to Mississippi State, a team that lost the national championship by three points last year.
It’s not just the Jackson show, though. Edison received help from key role players last year who are returning to the team in 2018 in Shaulana Wagner and Gabrielle Elliot. During the title game last season, Wagner sparked an 8-0 run and Elliot scored a game-high 20 points.
With contributors like that and more hard work from the team – according to ESPN, Jackson would text her coach about working out no matter the time or day, including a 2:30 a.m. message and a Christmas wake-up text – Edison can remain in the Super 25 and fight for its third straight title.
