Former Xavier commit Samari Curtis headed to Cincinnati

Samari Curtis, a 6-foot-4 Class of 2019 combo guard from Xenia (Ohio) High School who committed earlier this year to Xavier but reopened his recruitment three months later, announced his commitment Wednesday via Twitter to the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Curtis, a four-star prospect according to 247 Sports and the No. 2-ranked player in Ohio, announced his verbal commitment to Xavier in February, but announced in May that he was reopening his recruitment.

“First, I want to thank Coach (Travis) Steele and the staff of Xavier University for giving me the opportunity to continue my academic and athletic career,” Curtis wrote at the time. “But after talking with my family I have decided to decommit from Xavier University and open back up my recruitment. I am still very interested in Xavier. I just want to make the correct decision for my future. I will not be answering any media at this time.”

Chris Mack was Xavier’s head coach – before he left for Louisville in March – when Curtis committed to XU.

The 180-pound Curtis scored 30.4 points per game last season and 24.1 the year before, averages which led the Greater Western Ohio Conference in both seasons. Curtis averaged 13.4 points as a freshman.

Curtis is the No. 114-ranked player nationally by 247Sports.

Before committing to XU, Curtis also had offers from Akron, Toledo and Kent State.
