A four-year high school starter, McLain signed with UCLA and reports are that he is leaning toward being a Bruin before starting his professional baseball career. A shortstop in high school, McLain batted .390 with five home runs and 35 runs scored this spring.

“The scouts see his joy in everything Matt does,” Beckman coach Kevin Lavalle recently told the Orange County Register. “He redefines the word leadership. He redefines ‘work ethic.’ ”

MLB.com estimates that the No. 25 pick is worth $2,636,400.
