35. Ethan Hankins, RHP, Forsyth Central HS (Cumming, Ga.), Cleveland Indians
Previously a Vanderbilt commit, Hankins reportedly has signed with Chipola College in Marianna, Fla. By going the junior college route, Hankins could increase his draft stock to be selected again next year. Entering this season, there was talk that Hankins would be a top-five pick, but a shoulder injury early in the season affected his draft stock.
“When he came back, he was going through a rehab process, the stuff wasn’t quite where it had been previously,” Indians director of amateur scouting Scott Barnsby told the Akron Beacon Journal after the draft. “I think guys were kind of catching up on their looks. I don’t think there’s that much more to it, to be honest with you. I think what we felt really comfortable with was the work [scout] CT Bradford did to know that he’s healthy. He worked extremely hard through his rehab and each time we saw him toward the end of the season, the stuff got progressively better. He actually came in here and he threw and he spent some time with our medical staff to make sure that we felt really good about him.”
MLB.com estimates that the No. 35 pick is worth $2,016,400.
