Matthew McConaughey gives top Arizona recruit advice during Texas visit

By

Salpointe Catholic (Tucson, Ariz.) junior running back Bijan Robinson ran into Osar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey during his visit Saturday to Texas for the Longhorns’ spring football game.

A big Longhorns fan, McConaughey spent some time on field with Robinson, a five-star recruit who is being wooed by most of the Power 5 schools in the country, including USC, where he still hopes to run into one of his all-time favorite players, Reggie Bush.

Robinson posed for a picture with McConaughey, who gave Robinson some advice as he travels around to hit some of his favorite colleges during his recruiting process.

“Enjoy it,” Robinson said McConaughey told him. “Getting to meet him was great. He is a great guy, super energetic.”

Robinson called the overall Texas experience “amazing.”

“All the people in Austin are great the fans are second to none,” he said. “It was good to see how much they love football.”

Texas has suddenly had a deep reach in Arizona with two of the top 2019 recruits — Scottsdale Notre Dame Athlete Jake Smith (the Gatorade National Football Player of  the Year) and Chandler tight end/wide receiver Brayden Liebrock both signed with the Longhorns.

Scottsdale Saguaro junior cornerback Kelee Ringo, Arizona’s only other five-star recruit from the 2020 class, also ranks Texas high on his list, along with Robinon’s teammate, safety Lathan Ransom.

Ringo ranks No. 1, Robinson 2, and Ransom 4 by The Arizona Republic in the Big 150 for the 2020 class.

Robinson was impressed by the visit.

“The coaches were very cool, and they were real,” he said.
